Milan fashion houses to raise accessories offer

Leather handbags and high heeled shoes will continue to gain room in women's wardrobes as luxury groups plan to improve their offer to spice up sales, Italian fashion houses said at Milan's shows this week.

Sales of high-end accessories, which can be easier to wear and offer higher sales margins than clothes, have boomed during the downturn, helping fashion houses offset the falling demand for more costly luxury goods.

Fashion names such as Roberto Cavalli and Versace have said they try to boost production of handbags and shoes next year.

Should Young Girls Carry Purses?

I love that my daughter is into purses. That's, RIGHT NOW, I'm loving that my daughter is into purses. (In the future, this could pose a problem especially if she takes after her mother, whose vice is designer handbags and champagne.)

In any case, young girls and their purses are hilarious. The purse she loves to carry these days is a Hello Kitty purse which features a lot of zippers and Velcro.

I could only hope that a parenting magazine, one day, features what's inside young girl purses, because it is pretty hilarious.

We went to McDonald's a couple days later and, of course, my daughter brought her Hello Kitty purse. She won't leave the house without them and I know she's just waiting to come to the rescue in some public washroom to a woman who's in need of a tampon.

Chanel arranged to cut prices of key products

French fashion company Chanel S.A. will soon cut prices of its key items such as garments and handbags by up to ten percent after a free trade pact between South Korea and the European Union took effect early this month, industry sources said Monday.

But the French fashion firm has yet to choose the timing of the price cuts, according to the sources. Under the free trade deal, a 13 percent tariff on European-made bags and garments was immediately abolished.

Chanel's envisioned price cuts come after another European luxury brand, Hermes, cut prices of its key items by an average of 5.6 percent beginning with last Friday.

Unlike Louis Vuitton and Gucci, Chanel and Hermes ship their products from France, with their products being treated under the free trade pact, the sources said.

Luxury Market Surges Whilst the Rest of the Economy Sputters

Economic news these days is pretty bleak: job growth is anemic, retail sales are stagnating, and consumer confidence is plummeting. But the luxury goods market is another story. Today, the French company Hermes raised its 2011 income forecast by 12 to 14 percent on growing demand in the U.S. and China for its silk scarves and leather handbags. Last week, Burberry, which makes raincoats and leather goods, beat its revenue forecast for the first quarter of 2011. According to Reuters, investors are now pouring money into luxury stocks.

Rebound in U.S. and Europe In a May report, Bain & Company predicted that global luxury goods sales would increase 8 percent in 2011 in part as a result of renewed demand in the U.S., where department shop sales are increasing and Europe, where tourism is strong. "If customers tightened their purse strings in 2009, spooked by the financial crisis, and 2010 was the year they started loosening them again, 2011 should see a return to normal luxury goods consumption," Reuters wrote at that time. The luxury goods industry experienced its worst year on record in 2009 as a result of slackening demand in the U.S. and Southern Europe.
